Tarik Muharemovic: The £34M Bosnian Wall Rebuilding Leeds’ Defence

I have to admit, I was curious when we sold Pascal Struijk, about how we would replace him; the Dutchman having made that left centre-back berth effectively his own last season in a three-man defence that worked very well.

Though, with only one year left on his contract and him being keen to explore his options beyond a new deal, to get ball-park £20 million for him, I thought was decent.

It also goes someway towards contributing to our new signing; undoubtedly his direct replacement – after a fee was agreed for Tarik Muharemovic from Italian side Sassuolo who, I think for a net spend of £14 million, when you think about it, is a very good deal. Of course, amortisation would be involved as well which, split over five years of his contract makes this superb business.

The 23-year-old colossus arrives fresh off the back of a World Cup campaign for Bosnia & Herzogovina where he a standout performer for his country, while we have also nabbed one of the most highly rated, physical young defenders in European football.

Standing at 6’4″, Muharemovic fits the profile of centre-backs Daniel Farke wants. Considerably physical, strong in the tackle, great positionally with him being able to read the game and, crucially good on the ball with the ability to beat the high-press with composure and accurate cross-field balls. He’s also a weapon at set-pieces, which I think can be superb for us next season, with us having already proven this last term with the aerial physicality that we added last summer.

From what I’ve seen from our fans in the comments, there is a lot of negativity about us bringing in an ‘unproven’ player for such a fee, though I said this last season and was confident that the likes’ of Jaka Bijol and Anton Stach would perform. And they did. As a fanbase, we need to start trusting our recruitment team because, believe me, they know exactly what they’re doing! I have no doubt that Muharemovic will make a great impact and that he’ll prove to be an upgrade on Struijk eventually.

To get a left-footed centre-back in with this type of profile and fee, is brilliant and we’ve done superbly to find our way around the seemingly shortage of these types of players who I think, are becoming the most important in the modern game.

The Anatomy of a Modern Left-Sided Centre-Back: Why Left-Footedness Matters

In the current market, natural, left-footed centre-backs are a rare commodity – especially good ones. The reason why they command significant prices is because of the difference they make, compared to having a right-footed centre back on the left side who, generally speaking plays channel balls. Muhamerovic, is perfectly accustomed to finding more natural passing angles; even diagonal cross-field balls to the right that a right-footed left-sided centre-back simply cannot replicate.

As such, his left foot will allow us to launch the kind of attacks that some teams won’t be used to; stretching opponent’s pressing and forcing them to defend wider, horizontal spaces.

I can also back these claims up. In the Serie A, the defenders performances highlight his ability perfectly. Against a strong AC Milan team he completed 65 out of 67 passes, of different ranges, underlining his composure and supreme press resistance.

His ability to bypass the first line of an opponent’s press by playing low fizzing, vertical passes into the feet of our attacking midfielders, I think will be a huge asset for us, while he is also somewhat of a natural at using his body shape to disguise his natural intentions. One of his best traits from what I’ve seen is his ability to drag opposing midfielder’s out of position, through the way he angles his body for a ‘feint’ before slipping the ball into central corridors, where space has been created.

There will naturally be games next season where our penalty box is going to come under siege; I’d guess certainly against Arsenal away. Where Muhamerovic excels in this sense, is that he is a machine defending balls into the area. At the World Cup against Canada, he made 20 clearances and 16 against Switzerland, using his huge frame to his advantage.

Another area where I think he excels is in his defensive anticipation and positioning. It is very rare he has to rely on sliding tackles because of this and is more accustomed to making blocks and using his body to his advantage and being able to halt attacks before they really get into gear. I think this kind of defensive intelligence can take us to the next level.

Austrian Beginnings And The Juventus Next Gen Crucible

Making his debut at 18 for Wolfsberger AC in the Austrian Bundesliga, Muhamerovic quickly adapted to the game and his imposing, physical frame made him a considerable asset. A collection of impressive performances appear to have earned him a move to Juventus Next Gen where his game developed further playing in Italy’s Serie C and I think this is where he refined his tactical discipline; this, as well as ‘defensive dark arts’ of Italian defending being a major characteristic of top Italian teams.

From what I’ve seen, this has equipped him well; the tactical rigours of Italian football teaching him about value of horizontal line coordination, positional tracking and body orientation in 1v1 situations. Essentially I think he could even be better than Bijol, who we also signed from the Serie A (Udinese) and has been a brilliant defensive upgrade for us. These two combined, with Joe Rodon makes us a very tough team to beat, especially with Ethan Ampadu just in front.

During his season long loan with Sassuolo in the 2024/25 season, Muhamerovic also tasted silverware success with the club winning the Serie B title. I’m not surprised they swooped to bring him permanently and while there he showed how comfortable is operating in both a back four and three. He’ll slot into our defence seamlessly.

While at Juventus, Muharemovic earned his first international cap and swiftly became a regular, making 17 appearances by the age of 23. He’s had an impressive World Cup I think, though he can still improve certain parts of his game; his red card against Switzerland highlighting this. Our disciplinary record was pretty good last season and it would be good to maintain this.

I don’t think there’s any two ways about it. This is a statement signing from the board, part of which is to continue in their ambitions to assemble a side capable of challenging in the top half of the Premier League. The fact Juventus insisted on having a 50 percent sell-on clause locked into the deal, to me suggests how highly they value his ceiling, ensuring they protected their asset – great business but also a very good sign for us.

The fact we’ve signed him to a contract until 2031 as well, tells me that we mean business. There is a lot to like about this signing and we could well end up building an entire defensive generation around him; not that we haven’t already started doing this.

Our fans will love him I think. With fiercely working class roots and staunch beliefs, he also a natural leader, having captained the Under-21s at international level. This is something that I think our recruitment team value highly. When you look at our squad now, we have five or six of these throughout the pitch and it definitely seems to have translated in our results.

Muhamerovic is very vocal; just what you need at the back and his uncompromising physicality combined with his high intensity passion and technical composure makes him the kind of player that our fanbase will instantly fall in love with.
