With the transfer window now open to accommodate clubs going to the Club World Cup, this is a prime opportunity for us to get some early deals done and I definitely like this.
Since we were confirmed promotion back to the Premier League, we’ve been linked with a handful of players – some completely from left-field who have certainly split opinion.
I know many of you might think that we’re okay in defence, though I definitely think we need someone of Premier League experience and in Gomez, he doesn’t come any better for me.
And, seemingly available. For a reported fee of £25 million, he’s a steal, despite his £95k/week wages but I think he can definitely be a difference-maker in helping to keep us in the top flight.
He was a mainstay under Jurgen Klopp during Liverpool’s 2019/20 Premier League title win and can also play both centre-back and right-back. Add to that, he’s also a favourite (when fit) for England selection.
What Could Gomez Give Us?
For me, I really like the fact that he is no stranger to a battle – he learned his trade in the lower leagues at Charlton and then became a very strong, tactically astute top-flight defender.
He has also won everything in the game. It is early days, though I’m surprised there is not stronger competition for his signature and this is my worry. We need to get this deal done and pronto.
Comfortable with the ball at his feet, aerially and physically strong and tactically astute I think his experience would be vital to us. Whether it is Joe Rodon or Pascal Struijik who partners him – Gomez for me would be number one back there. With Ethan Ampadu just in front as well, this would form a great foundation for us.
He has proven his worth up against the best forwards in the game and when we play the bg clubs, I think he can have a major impact.
If we did get him, then wow – I know we’re looking at others apparently as well in defence, though Gomez does have versatility and, if needed can step into holding midfield or play in either full-back position – certainly right-back.
